Can someone plug us back in? Pleaaaase?
*waves* I live!

I'm very cold and worn out, but I live. We lost power about half an hour after my last post and it hasn't been back since. We're about at the 72 hour mark right now. Unfortunately, they're saying that our neighborhood may not see power for several more days at this point. DOH. Not to mention the fact that it's dropping below freezing at night. I can see my breath inside the house. Last I saw, the temperature inside the house was at about 50 degrees and falling - that was 10 hours ago, I'm sure it's dropped further by now.

Luckily, my friends are the best, and a good friend and her family who had power offered a room and teh internets to me. Oh, man, it feels SO good to be warm again. I've felt like I've been glued to the fireplace for the last three days, while wearing three layers of pants and three sweatshirts and still shivering cold. I've read The Princess Bride, the first Harry Potter book, and a good chunk of the Walt Disney biography. I spent ten minutes today bouncing around my living room happily and squeeing over a pair of northern flickers that were out digging through a wood pile. (Got photos, too!) I've actually slept about 14 hours a day (work had no power, and was closed until today) because I have four blankets on my bed right now, and once I get in there, it's cozy and I refuse to get up. :P

Unfortunately, the store was back open today so I had to get off my lazy duff and go into work. I stopped for gas because I was running low, and joined the long line. Whatever, a few minutes wasn't bad compared to the horror stories I heard. Unfortunately, I joined the line behind a complete fucktard who wasn't paying attention to his driving... and ended up BACKING INTO MY CAR despite my frantic blaring of the horn. What transpired next, I won't repeat here in detail, but suffice it to say that I unleashed my pent-up aggression on him (damn, it felt good) and had a guy six inches taller and at least 50 lbs heavier than me ducking and scrambling away from me in terror. (the people at work later found this incredibly hilarious, and the punching jokes came nonstop all night ;)) My hood is rather bent up, but I think mechanically the car's okay. I'll still take it in and have it looked at, though, just to be sure. *cough* But my back hurt all afternoon at work... *whistles not-so-innocently*

Work wasn't bad. It was warm, and most people there were in the same situation, so everyone kinda commiserated together. Half our employees hung around even when they weren't working, just because it was a warm place to be. I tried to go to the grocery store next door to buy dinner, but failed miserably. Needless to say, the place had already been picked clean. All I could really find to buy for dinner was a bottle of Coke (the last bottle of normal Coke they had!), a bag of Goldfish, a Power Bar, and a bag of gummi candy. But dammit, it was food.

This is definitely the biggest storm I can remember, and many others are saying the same thing. We've never gone more than four days without power (Day-After-Christmas snowstorm in the mid-90s), and it looks like we may surpass that one this time. There's so many trees down that many major surface streets are still totally impassable. More than a million people lost power at some point, and a few hundred thousand people are still in the dark now, three days later. The power companies are saying the damage is so extensive, it's taking them ages to fix everything. I'd believe it - I passed one work crew on my way into work. When I left 8 hours later, they were still working on the same spot. We've been through many power outages before, though, so at least we're more or less prepared.

Unfortunately, there was one casualty in the family - my parakeet, Ellie, didn't make it. She was already fairly old, and the stress of the storm and the floor stuff the days before and being in a new place (she was at a friend's) and the bitter cold finally took their toll. :( Latte's doing okay so far, although I noticed today that she's shivering, and she refuses to sleep by the fire because she likes her chair in the other room too much. I wrapped a blanket around her before I left for work, so hopefully that kept her warm for awhile.

I've really enjoyed the Christmas cards I've been getting for the last few days, though! *huggles her flist* I'm still working on trying to get mine out - unfortunately, they're gonna be a bit delayed!

ETA: my favorite storm photo so far, 'cause this just about sums it up:

And what my hometown looks like right now, with all the smoke from everyone's fireplaces:

I'd heard about the extent of the power loss from a swap organiser on craftster.org, who also still doesn't have power to her house. The storm sounds like it was absolutely insane! So sorry to hear about your poor parakeet!

Yeah, there's still almost 300,000 people without power as of this morning. It's pretty nasty out here. :(
The Duuuuuuude: Duuuuuuude[info]dcpesses on December 18th, 2006 09:25 am (UTC)
I've been following it in the news, it's actually being covered around the nation, and I keep hearing of people organizing efforts to get supplies and workmen into the area.

Best of luck (and lots of warmth) to all y'all!

I'd heard a snippet of it on the radio the other night (thankfully we at least have a battery-operated radio!) but I wasn't sure how much of it was actually being covered. They've brought crews from as far as Kansas already, and they're saying they may even start bringing them from farther away than that.

Oy, I didn't realize it was that bad up there! (Haven't checked the news in ages.) My mom asked acouple days ago if I had heard from you and I said that had mentioned wind, but I'll hafta tell her about the no power thing. Stay warm! I hope your power comes on soon!
Kirsten[info]xfkirsten on December 18th, 2006 08:32 pm (UTC)
Thanks! I'm sill huddled up at a friend's house for a bit before heading to work. I've got my fingers crossed!

I'm so sorry about your parakeet. :(

Just reading this post made me feel cold - though it could also be partly because the location I'm at has minimal heating at best at the moment. ;) Sounds quite terrible there. Fortunately I've never been on the receiving end of too bad weather. I've encountered spectacular thunder storms, torrential downpours and antarctic-like temperatures, but I've always been lucky enough to be tucked up in my warm apartment, and the power has usually stayed on!

I hope things improve.

We're pretty used to big storms here - Seattle gets them from time to time. This one didn't seem any bigger at the time, but there's just so much damage from it, it's incredible. Trees down everywhere, powerlines topped. I'm just glad we didn't end up with a tree through our house like so many others did!
I'm not very interesting: Bushbaby[info]astropoet on December 18th, 2006 01:55 pm (UTC)
We've had it bad on the Atlantic North West but mostly rain and floods. What is with the weather?

*hugs you to keep you warm*
Kirsten[info]xfkirsten on December 18th, 2006 08:34 pm (UTC)
I don't know! I've spent the vast majority of my life living in the Seattle area, and this is the craziest season I can remember. It's just been storm after storm, building up! *hugs*

Wow scary! But kinda exciting ;) Poor Ellie :(
Kirsten[info]xfkirsten on December 18th, 2006 08:35 pm (UTC)
It's like a mini-adventure. A really cold one. :P
Unspokenlonging[info]unspokenlonging on December 18th, 2006 02:27 pm (UTC)
I'm so sorry about ellie! *huge huggles*

Send down some of your cold. Us so. Calers can handle it!
Kirsten[info]xfkirsten on December 18th, 2006 08:36 pm (UTC)
*big huggles* Hmmm... Firefox says it's 35 degrees right now, is that okay? :P
Unspokenlonging[info]unspokenlonging on December 18th, 2006 09:25 pm (UTC)
Sure! You might actually be sending some down as we speak. It's pretty cold right now and it's in the afternoon!
Kirsten[info]xfkirsten on December 19th, 2006 09:25 am (UTC)
On the way! :P (But somehow, it's still only 34 here now!)
Leah[info]ulisesgirl on December 18th, 2006 04:12 pm (UTC)
Sorry about your birdie... :( That's sad.

But no. NO ELECTRICITY FOR YOU!!! BWAH!
Kirsten[info]xfkirsten on December 18th, 2006 08:36 pm (UTC)
I shall use my electric eels of doom to power my house!! BWAHAHAHAHAHA!! I will take over the world, and nothing can stop me!!
Leah[info]ulisesgirl on December 19th, 2006 12:29 am (UTC)
Are their names Flotsam and Jetsam perchance?
Kirsten[info]xfkirsten on December 19th, 2006 09:26 am (UTC)
Shhh! No telling! I'll steal your voice, I will!
Sally[info]mizz_magenta on December 18th, 2006 06:15 pm (UTC)
Hole cow, that's heavy. Didn't realise things were that severe. Sorry about Ellie. *hugs* but glad you're okay. Bummer about your car. Loved to have seen you lay into that guy, lol.
Kirsten[info]xfkirsten on December 18th, 2006 08:38 pm (UTC)
You woulda been proud. I managed to scream, cuss, and punch like a sailor, and still have everyone in the gas station on my side. :D

I don't think anyone here expected it to be this severe, either. We all expected it to be a run of the mill storm, a couple of days without power at the worst. Not this mess!
Sally[info]mizz_magenta on December 19th, 2006 12:31 am (UTC)
Proud indeed! :D *pats you on back*

Has the weather people given any indication of how long it will last, know that (i gather) they have more information?
Kirsten[info]xfkirsten on December 19th, 2006 09:27 am (UTC)
The below-freezing nights are supposed to stick around for at least a few days more. :( Still no solid estimate on getting power back, either - it could be any time from tomorrow all the way through the weekend!
Caroline: Ariel[info]dr_weir_uk on December 18th, 2006 06:24 pm (UTC)
((Hugs)) I hope the situation improves soon!!! There are a worrying no of retards in this world. :( Sorry to read your parakeet died. :(

Coke is my food every single day! :P
Kirsten[info]xfkirsten on December 18th, 2006 08:39 pm (UTC)
*hugs* Thank you. :)

Coke is quickly turning into its own food group here. You can't find milk anywhere, it all went bad when grocery stores lost power. I suppose juice is probably easier to come by, although bottled water is quickly disappearing as well.
Unspokenlonging[info]unspokenlonging on December 18th, 2006 09:24 pm (UTC)
Oh yeah, Hooray for you for making a grown man nearly piss his pants!! *would have killed to have been there*
Kirsten[info]xfkirsten on December 19th, 2006 09:28 am (UTC)
You woulda been proud! :D
Sue: Park[info]suekay_87 on December 18th, 2006 11:15 pm (UTC)
((((big hugs))))

I've not heard anything about storms in your area...hope everythings back to normal as soon as possible...I'm really sorry about your parakeet :(
Kirsten[info]xfkirsten on December 19th, 2006 09:30 am (UTC)
Thanks! *hugs* I have no idea how much it's really covered in the news even here in the States. I think it got attention the first day, but I don't know if it's been mentioned again even after that. Then again, I've been so cut off this week that I don't even know what's going on in the outside world. :P
