Rent!
Having an anti-social week... I'm in manic phase right now, working on a sewing project. Seriously, when I get hooked on a project, I obsess over it, to the point where I can't sleep because my mind is frantically thinking about it. And then I end up getting up and working on it all night. And then the next day. Such is my creative muse.

Anyways, that's not the point of this entry. The point is... RENT!!!!

Just got back from seeing Rent for the first time on stage. SO amazing! It was opening night here in San Diego, and the house was packed. I, being broke, was up in the cheap seats, but I could care less. :P

I gotta hand it to the cast, they were all spectacular! LOVED Mark (Jed Resnick). Suitably geeky, and gave a performance that was very reminiscent of Anthony Rapp. Roger's (Bryce Ryness) "Rent" was a bit underwhelming, so I was worried for a bit. But once he got to "One Song" he really let it all out! I gotta hand it to him, too - there was some trouble with his mike sounding scratchy in the beginning of Act I. Somewhere during "Light My Candle," a regular, hand-held mike appeared in his hand. However they did it, it was so smooth that I didn't even realize for a long time that he even had it! He ended up having to use that for the better part of the first act. Tom (Warren G. Nolan, Jr.) has, quite possibly, one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard. I was swooning just about as much over his voice as I do over Jesse Martin's. Benny (Michael Ifill) was a bit hard to understand at times - he seemed to sing a bit softer and with less enunciation than the others, and it made it difficult to hear what he was saying. Joanne (Chante Carmel Frierson) had a great, powerful voice. Angel (Ano Okera) was cute as ever! Mimi (Arianda Fernandez) I was kinda so-so on. Her sort of lisp got a bit overpowering at times. And I feel bad saying this, but it made Mimi look a bit retarded. Her "Light My Candle" and "Without You" were awesome, though. :P Maureen (Tracy McDowell) was AWESOME. In "Over the Moon," she really drew out those "gotta gotta gotta"s for EVER. :D But seriously, one of the scene-stealers was one of the ensemble members. I think it was Altamiece Carolyn Ballard? OMG, she had the most POWERFUL, clear voice. In "Seasons of Love," she just blew me away. MAD props to her for that!

"Take Me or Leave Me" was SO hot. The audience was howling through the whole thing! Very nicely done! "Contact" was a bit annoying for me (and everyone sitting around me). The light behind Angel points RIGHT at the upper balcony, so we were all totally blinded for most of the song.

And yes, I mooed. Loudly. XD

Because I'm a little chicken, I didn't go to the stage door afterwards. Maybe for Wicked I will! (TWO WEEKS FROM TOMORROW!)

HONEST LIVING! :P

Glad you enjoyed the theater so much! I was totally crushed when the production of Grease I saw in New Orleans turned out to be such a disappointment. There was no passion at all!

And on a completely different note, I met a guy last night who helped build the Lady Washington. Technically, it was a replica, since the original is quite old. But still. That ship should mean something to you, savvy?
Kirsten[info]xfkirsten on July 12th, 2006 05:37 pm (UTC)
That sucks! :( I saw Grease once, years ago, with Gen ,at the Village Theater. I don't remember much about it, though, or whether it was any good or not.

Oh, that's awesome! That name definitely means something to me - I've been on that ship! ;) I have pictures of the "Interceptor" sign that still hangs over one of the doorways. ;)

Making a pirate!Elizabeth costume! ;) I'm hoping to have it done in time for ComicCon. If not then, then I'll use it at Halloween.

I may go for Wicked, since that's the show I've really been dying to see. :)

Still bitter and jealous about that one... stupid show selling out like, SO fast.
Kirsten: Wicked - Loathing[info]xfkirsten on July 13th, 2006 02:42 am (UTC)
I know, it's insane! I wish LA would get a long-term run at Pantages.
BreezieGirl[info]bleach226 on July 13th, 2006 07:01 am (UTC)
That would be phenomenal!
Leah[info]ulisesgirl on July 12th, 2006 04:03 pm (UTC)
I saw Rent here the last time it came... it was AWESOME! Neil Patrick Harris came back for just one night because he's from Albuquerque. He was really, really good!

Never did like "contact"... thought it was dumb.
Kirsten: Rent - Moo With Me[info]xfkirsten on July 12th, 2006 05:47 pm (UTC)
Oh, that would be so awesome to see! I heard he made such a great Mark!

Yeah, "Contact" definitely isn't one of my faves, either. The ending of it is really poignant, but the rest of it is... meh.

Ooh, if you get your pirate!Elizabeth costume done, you should be easier to find... I hope. ;)

Glad you got a good cast for Rent. I've never really been a Rent fan, I like some of the songs and all, but it isn't one of my favs like "Les Mes" or "POTO". It also didn't help that the cast that I saw sucked. They kept trying to out sing each other they even managed to make Season of Love sound unbearable.

And I'm Jealous, why is Wicked going to bein SD and not up in LA??! Bah. have fun there. =P
Kirsten[info]xfkirsten on July 12th, 2006 07:39 pm (UTC)
I've got a fair amount of work left to do on it, but I'm working pretty steadily! I've got the pants most of the way done, although they were annoying me so I took a break to do the shirt and I'll go back and tweak the pants later. Still got hte vest to do, and I have a pair of shoes to turn into boots. I think I might go to Party City or something and get a hat, then just re-cover it with the fabric I want. :)

See, I've never gotten into the shows like Les Mis or POTO. I tend to go for some of the more modern shows, although Grease has always been one of my favorites, too. That sucks that you got bad cast! Ours sounded very similar to the original cast, actually, and most of them did a superb job.

Wicked already was in LA! You guys got it last summer! :P Although it IS going to be in Orange County in August - I'm going then, too! If you could still find tickets for that run, I'd be surprised. [info]roguecows spent 6 hours in line getting them!
AthenaKTT[info]athenaktt on July 12th, 2006 09:01 pm (UTC)
Wicked already was in LA! You guys got it last summer!

Yeah, but that one sold out pretty quick and at that time none of my friends couldn't make it to the show because they were still all in school. Now we all have time and money to go to shows. =P

Les Mis was the first one that I saw and feel in love with it immediately. Then again I've always been into period drama/musicals more than modern stuff. ;)
Kirsten: Wicked - Deeply Shallow[info]xfkirsten on July 13th, 2006 02:40 am (UTC)
Wicked ALWAYS sells out quickly. :P It's amazing how popular it is right now, and as far as the national tour goes, it's virtually ALL word-of-mouth advertising. All they have to do is post the dates on their websites, and tickets are gone within a few days. I'm surprised they're not doing longer runs in each city, really. The Lion King was doing AT LEAST a few weeks (sometimes more) in each city, although admittedly they had to make up for having to rearrange orchestra seating in many theaters.

I keep hoping that LA will get a long-term Wicked run at Pantages or something. I'd LOVE to see that!
Amie[info]hipapheralkus on July 12th, 2006 10:23 pm (UTC)
I'm quite impressed you can sew. I keep thinking it'd be cool to try and do something, then realize I haven't a hope in hell of actually doing it.

Glad you had so much fun at the theatre. The one thing I'd love to see again is Phantom of the Opera. I saw it 12 years ago, and I keep hoping it'll come back to Toronto so I can go again. If I ever manage to finish reading Wicked, I think I'd like to see it on stage.

As for being a chicken, I think you're way less of a chicken than I am. Believe me.
Kirsten[info]xfkirsten on July 13th, 2006 02:02 am (UTC)
You should try it! I'm entirely self-taught, and still learning a LOT. I only started a year ago, and made a REALLY crappy Atlantis jacket as my first project. My second project (Sorcerer Mickey) came out much better, as did my third - a new Atlantis jacket. This one's coming along great so far!

Wicked is fascinating onstage, since the show is SO different than the book. I keep telling people - theater did to Wicked what Disney did to Hunchback of Notre Dame or Tarzan. It's fun to see how it's changed.

We should start a club for chickens. :P
Amie[info]hipapheralkus on July 13th, 2006 02:06 am (UTC)
I might try it sometime. I have this thing about failure though, so we'll see.

Yes, a club for chickens. Who'd be the president of said club? :P
Kirsten[info]xfkirsten on July 13th, 2006 02:43 am (UTC)
Totally understandable. It's frustrating at first, but worth it in the long run!

Hmm... McKay could be our honorary president! :P

BreezieGirl[info]bleach226 on July 13th, 2006 07:10 am (UTC)
I'd say that I can generally agree with most of your statements. I really liked the actors playing Mark and Roger, thought it took me a bit to warm up to both. I liked the Mimi in most of Light My Candle, Without You, and Goodbye Love, but she kind of irked me in other songs... especially Another Day. I loved Collins, but didn't care too much for Angel. In some songs he was good, but in others I wasn't too impressed. I tried really hard not to compare them to other casts I've heard (granted the majority of OC and the movie cast is the same, but still, different sound), so I don't think I was. I LOVED the staging of Will I? And I liked Contact, but I also wasn't blinded by it, so yeah. Overall, I really liked it, I love Alexi Darling, hysterical.
Kirsten: Rent - Moo With Me[info]xfkirsten on July 13th, 2006 07:59 am (UTC)
Yup, Another Day was one of the songs where Mimi really bugged me. She just sounded...weird. Not like "different from what I've heard before" weird, but more like "not what people should sound like when they're singing" weird. :P

"Kerching, kerching!"

Hey! I saw your comments in [info]mcalex22's LJ and checked out your profile. My favourite SGA characters are the reverse of yours. McKay is my absolute favourite, and Weir is my second favourite. I'm into SG-1 too, and while I have never been to Disneyland, I have gone to Disney World many times - not as many times as you've been to Disneyland. I also love what you're doing for animals. I have added you to my friends list. You can add me back, if you want.
