SeaWorld!
Finally made it back to SeaWorld! I know, I'm so slow at that. But Cirque and Believe called, so I obliged. I got there right before the first showing of "Believe" (the new Shamu show) for the day - it doesn't officially open until Saturday, but soft openings are going on now...

I'll start by saying it's not as bad as I thought it might be, but it's not the big "spectacular" show it's billed as, either. IMHO, it's pretty par for the course. It opens with video of a boy carving a whale's tail into a necklace, mixed with shots of wild killer whales. Soon, he gets into a kayak and ends up coming face-to-face with a killer whale. I think that was supposed to be him dremaing, but I'm not sure. Anyways, the whole show then launches into a theme of believing in your dreams. The story starts off strong and dramatic, which had my hopes up. But after the introduction, it really drops off into your typical Shamu show. The finale is this weird routine where they get everyone to make a "W" shape with your hands and chant "Shamu!" to get him to splash you. The kids got into it, but it goes on. And on. And on. And ZOMG CAN WE STOP THE W THING NOW?! But the kicker for me is the lack of an educational component. It looks like there's a bit in the preshow (I came into the stadium just a few minutes before showtime, so I missed most of that) - but the show itself offers nothing educational. I've ranted about that before, so I won't here, but suffice it to say that bugs the crap outta me.

For all their crowing about the new innovative behaviors and such, I didn't see much that was too different than anything that they've done before. At the very least, there was nothing creative enough that it stuck out in my mind. The moving video screens are a cool touch, but sadly a novelty wears off quickly and leaves you wondering where the real spectacle is. Also, I'm not sure about this - to the people of my f-list who've seen the show, are the right two screens supposed to have a smaller picture like that? I couldn't decide whether it was a technical difficulty (as this is a soft opening) or it was supposed to look "artistic." It looks dumb. The fountains were minimal, and nothing really new.

That said, it had some nice points. I liked how they tied the kid picked from the audience into the finale. The kid gets a whale tail necklace like the one in the opening video, and they tie it all together by showing side-by-side on the screen the kid from the beginning, photos of a couple of trainers featured in the show, and the kid from the audience, all wearing the necklace. The music was cute - if they were to release a CD, I'd probably buy it, but it wouldn't be like Blue Horizons where I'd be dying to have a copy.

One nitpick on the dialogue - at one point, a trainer tells one of their favorite stories about their experience. Today's trainer talked about something that happened in the underwater viewing, and asked who had been down there. Like two of us raised our hands. Why? IT'S STILL CLOSED, and has been for MONTHS. She then went on to gush over how it was her favorite place in the park. I guarantee you, people were scratching their heads and wondering where they missed that part of the exhibit. *headdesk*

Bottom line? It's a cute show. I'll give them that. If you're expecting something fresh and innovative, keep walking. It's better than the ripped-up Shamu Adventure we've had over the last couple of years, but not as good as the original version of the Shamu Adventure.

After that it was on to the sea lion stadium. DING DONG, DEEP DEEP TROUBLE IS DEAD! Not that I'm happy about that or anything. :P Anyways, the rumored shutdown that was talked about since last summer happened ('bout damn time!) and the set has been redone a bit. The best part, though - they're showing Sea Lions Tonite while it's being reworked. YAY! Sea Lions Tonite has always been one of my faves - it's fudging HILARIOUS. Unfortunately, they forced "Survivor" and "American Idol" segments in there, and they're kinda lame and really not very funny. Also unfortunately, the audience is now missing out on a HUGE chunk of the jokes - as the show is several years old, it spoofs the Shamu Adventure right down to the wetsuits, music, and even word-for-word dialogue. Hilarious to me, but left much of the audience (who has been seeing Believe now) staring blankly. Oh, but they have a walrus back in the show now. YAY! It's been ages since I've seen a walrus in their shows.

Sadly, Cirque didn't end up having any soft openings today as originally planned, but they did run a rehearsal in the afternoon that I watched from the stadium gates. I couldn't see poles or hand-to-hand really from there, but I'll live. Even got a chance to talk to some of the performers I knew from last year - WOO! It was fun to catch up with people. And OMG, they TOTALLY changed the bungee routine from last year. Like, completely. Y'all don't have to try and catch the performer with the motor at the end of the segment? No fair! Damn, how many times did I knock one of them with that weight? Anyways, I was SO glad to see that show again. Didn't see many other major changes - just a few choreography moves here and there. Did they take the PWCs out of the preshow altogether? Or were they just not being used today? And dude, why is it that on the day I'm there, [info]sana_chan, [info]richiied, AND Anel all aren't working? No fair! :P

I came home after that, and my parents arrived and we went out to Outback for dinner. Yaaaaay, steak! Sounds like we'll be going to SeaWorld tomorrow, 'cause they wanna see that. No complaint here - Cirque is supposed to start soft openings tomorrow for real this time. :P And some of you previously mentioned better be working, dammit! :P

Just got all my pics for the day uploaded - I went a bit photo crazy. Lots of Believe, Sea Lions Tonite, and Cirque de la Mer!

Also, my freezer died today, and that makes me sad. *waves byebye to the ice cream*

I'm probably in love with The Shamu Adventure so I'm being rather judgmental about Believe...I think the premise is questionable, but I'll try not to make up my mind about it before I see it.

If those damn bleachers aren't down in a week and a half, I'm going to kill someone. No. Really.

Thanks for putting up photos. They made my night. :)

The premise really struck me as SeaWorld trying to play at Disney's "magic" or "inspirational" ideas, and I think it just didn't work. It had a moment or two, but it largely falls flat. :/ But yeah, we'll see what (if anything) changes over the first few weeks of its run.

I doubt the bleachers will be gone - it didn't look like they were going anywhere any time soon. :(

Glad you enjoyed them! :)

I've never been to SeaWorld. I'd always heard it was cruel to the animals. I don't really believe that now so amybe someday I'll go.

You're freezer died?! No Ice Cream?! *cries for you*
Kirsten[info]xfkirsten on May 26th, 2006 07:02 am (UTC)
I worked there for a year and a half, and I still have sort of mixed feelings about it. They do take very good care for the animals - short of release, there's really not much more that they can do for them. And quite frankly, release isn't an option, IMHO - the majority of killer whales and other dolphins in US marine parks today where born there, thus making them VERY poor release candidates. It would be more cruel to release them into an environment where they wouldn't survive. And I think it's important that those animals play a critical role in helping educate the public about their wild counterparts and conservation, which is where I think SeaWorld has REALLY dropped the ball in this show.

Yeah. :( It's stopped being cold, and when the refridgeration tries to kick in it just buzzes at me and dies. :( I called the office and put in a maintenance request, but he won't be here til tomorrow. In the meantime, I just pulled out anything that would go bad and/or make a mess and chucked it. :(

I've been driving past a billboard for Believe everyday (yes, in phoenix.. all they really need to advertise is 'hi, we have water') and have been meaning to ask you about it heh.

They're sticking it on billboards way out there? Daaamn!

Aww! I feel sad knowing that you missed out on ice creamy goodness. I think that deserves going out and eatng a tub straight away so it doesn't melt. :P

Sometimes I think it's so weird that neither one of us works there anymore. I miss it, though. It's interesting to read your review of the new show; I've been wanting to see it since you described the concepts to me over a year ago. God knows when that'll be, though. :\
Kirsten: Orca - Kohana[info]xfkirsten on May 26th, 2006 03:06 pm (UTC)
It is weird to think about! It was a bit odd going yesterday and NOT being employed there anymore. That was the first time I'd gone since I left.
[info]tooshort4myego on May 26th, 2006 09:01 am (UTC)
We should go see cirque together once it opens. And I can't believe they don't have to catch them with the motor anymore! That was the only part that actually took skill! The rest of the routine is just memory and timing! I was so proud of myself when the bungee girls said i did it very well! Oh well, it was a great summer last year.
Kirsten[info]xfkirsten on May 26th, 2006 03:09 pm (UTC)
We so should! And I was all, "no faiiir!" They end the segment by hanging from the bar by one hand, rather than mid-bounce. And they end the whole show while still sitting on the bar, too. It was kinda anti-climactic. :/ But they have some mad cool tricks this year that I remember practicing with them between shows last year.
[info]tooshort4myego on May 26th, 2006 10:36 pm (UTC)
did you say the show opens tomorrow?
Kirsten[info]xfkirsten on May 27th, 2006 06:32 am (UTC)
Yup! They had soft openings today, and it opens officially tomorrow. :)
Kirsten[info]xfkirsten on May 27th, 2006 06:32 am (UTC)
Oh, and I saw Dustin (he's a crew chief this year) and Anel today - she says we all need to get together again, and I'm in total agreement! :)
[info]tooshort4myego on May 27th, 2006 06:36 am (UTC)
totally, when do you want to hang out with all the cirque crew from last year?
Kirsten[info]xfkirsten on May 27th, 2006 06:55 am (UTC)
Whenever possible! :P

I do hope that the show is good in Texas. I saw a video for the one in Orlando, and it looked good, but like you said, nothing spectacular.

I wonder how hard it is on the camera with all that blue?
Kirsten: Orca - Kohana[info]xfkirsten on May 27th, 2006 06:31 am (UTC)
I haven't heard much about Texas' version! I'm kinda curious how the Orlando version compares, though.

My camera at least doesn't seem to have too much of a heart attack with all the blue. :)

You know, I got REALLY confused when you said you saw "Believe"...and then said it was at SeaWorld?! It's almost 2 o'clock my time, but it's still too early for me to be able to process another show with that name...*stayed up too late last night* :P

The show sounds worthwhile; it's been so long since I've visited SeaWorld, so I like experiencing it vicariously, at least.

*hands you a virtual ice cream cone*
Kirsten[info]xfkirsten on May 27th, 2006 06:30 am (UTC)
LOL! I thought that when I first saw the title of the show, too. I mean, with all the people working on this show, SOMEONE in management had to have noticed that and not cared - or encouraged it for the same reason. :P

Iiiiice creeeeeam!
[info]shes_falling on May 26th, 2006 07:16 pm (UTC)
what happened to whoever-that-is's throat...in the picture where someone is spyhopping in the background below the screens.

I always love the satire in the SLOW show =)

Ah, that would be Sumar - I'm not sure what happened, but it's certainly a mess!

I have a love/hate relationship with SeaWorld. While I do know they do good, and such, for the conservation, and I enjoy the park, I have such issues with these animals being in captivity, the Orcas especially. I haven't been back in a while. I know there was many a time I teared up at the show, not only because of the sheer beauty of the creatures, but sadness at their not being free. Yes, I know we have zoos, but most zoos don't train their animals to fetch like dogs.

Okay. Stepping off my soap box now.
Kirsten: Orca - Kohana[info]xfkirsten on May 27th, 2006 06:27 am (UTC)
I know exactly what you mean. It's sort of a damned-if-you-do, damned-if-you-don't situation at this point, I think. In the 60s, it was critical for people to connect with the killer whales because they were seen as competition for the fisherman and were being shot at and killed at alarming rates. But then it spiralled out of control and we've got tons of captive-born animals that would never be able to survive in the wild, so we're stuck caring for them whether we like it or not. And I definitely take issue with SeaWorld turning the whales into clowns. They make them look like trained dogs, like you say, and it really detracts from the animals natural beauty. They'd rather "wow" people with tricks (and I deliberately avoid the proper zoo term "behaviors" here) than teach them to respect the animals these days, and THAT is exactly why I decided not to pursue an animal training career at SeaWorld like I'd always dreamed of.
[info]gekla on May 27th, 2006 01:56 pm (UTC)
ahh, it's really difficult to create a new behaviours for the shows.. But I think, they do it in Believe! maybe I'm incorrect.
New Sea Lion show is best! Kids, let's say thanks for Mr. (or Ms.?) Walrus and Otters ;)
Kirsten[info]xfkirsten on May 28th, 2006 01:27 am (UTC)
Yeah, they said in a lot of the promo stuff that they trained tons of new behaviors. And I don't doubt that, but from a guest's perspective, I don't see that in the show - it looks the same.
[info]gekla on May 28th, 2006 10:17 am (UTC)
I always wanna to do in any new in shows in any facility, where I work. I always puzzle, what we need to do so that show looks another for guests. And Eureka!!! Show mustn't will started from dolphin's bows! =D Not only this. We need in new, fresh brains of guys, who never saw dolphin shows, they can suggest really great behaviours! For Shamu Show, maybe they need to refuse from water program and a lot of animal-human interactions. Maybe it sounds crazy! heh, if I ever will work in SW I try to do something new ;)
I've video from Italian Dolphinarium in Riccione, it's actually funny show, with standart behaviours.. But for some reason it looks awesome!
Kirsten[info]xfkirsten on May 29th, 2006 03:40 am (UTC)
Yup, new ideas are definitely important - they keep the shows fresh! That's great that the Italian show does so well with standard behaviors. It's not WHAT you do, but how you do it! :)
