Felt like wandering after class, so I went down to the Mission Bay Flood Channel for birdwatching and such! It's been awhile since I've been there. Dear lord, the tide was way out. Even after all the time I spent there when I did a research project there for Vertebrate Natural History, I never saw it that far out.

Had a blast with my camera! Here's a few of the pics I liked best:
Desert Cottontail - BUNNY!! He was frozen in place, just a few feet away from me. Sat there while I took photos, too! I probably traumatized him or something.
Duck Fight - Duck fiiiiight!
Unknown Ducks - Okay, I can't for the life of me identify the species. They were hanging out next to some ruddy ducks. They look like female buffleheads, but I saw no males. Cyber cookies to anyone who can ID them for me!
Little Blue Heron in Flight - LOVE the color on these guys! Their only known nesting site in the San Diego area is actually at SeaWorld (just behind me)
Little Blue Heron in Flight 2 - Another, 'cause they're so damn pretty
Osprey - HELL. YES. I saw something big in my peripheral vision and turned to see this big beautiful osprey soar RIGHT over my head!
Snowy Egret - They're everywhere, they're brave, I have lots of pics of them.

Lots of pics that came out meh, due to bad lighting (cloudy and dark and icky today) and a cheap 300mm lens. Ah, well, they'll be good reference for drawing, at least. I REALLY need a 400mm+ lens. Anyone want to buy me one? C'mon, you know you want to!! I think once I have a job and bills/rent are covered okay, I'm gonna save up for one. But if I'm spending that much money, I'm gonna do it right and buy an L-series lens. *drools at the thought* Buuuuy meeeee leeeeeeeennnsssss! Pleaaaaaase?!

Anyways, here's the full species list for today :
Black-Necked Stilt (?)
Caspian Tern
Snowy Egret
Osprey
Long-Billed Curlew
Marbled Godwit
Desert Cottontail
Greater Yellowlegs
House Finch
Willet
Ruddy Ducks
Great Blue Heron
Little Blue Heron
Brown Pelican
Spotted Sandpiper
Black Phoebe
Barn Swallow

Been watching The Outer Limits on SciFi. The episode last hour had Marina Sirtis. Wheee! The characters were trying to get to a place called "Snoqualmie." That made me giggle, every single time they said it. My immediate thought was "Dear god, why would you want to go there? They don't call it the 'best concrete in the Northwest' for nothing. Go to Crystal or Stevens or Baker instead!" Why yes, I am skiing deprived, thank you! And now, Torri's episode of The Outer Limits is on! Hooray! I've seen it before, but I love it. Kind of a predictable ending, but Torri's character is SO nervous and shy and un-Weir, it's fun to watch. And the lead guy is really hot. ;)

Those pictures you posted came out really good. And cloudy days are actually usually really good for taking pictures outside, especially at the beach as "beautiful" days are usually really bright. The person that did my senior pictures, who is a family friend, prefers cloudy days to sunny days when taking pictures at the beach.

Yeah, I think the biggest problem is that it just makes bird pictures look so drab. :( But it does make for nice, flat lighting.

Great piccies, even with misty weather. :)

Have fun watching! I haven't seen the ep with Torri yet, at least I can't remember. I used to watch it some years ago. :)
Kirsten[info]xfkirsten on May 3rd, 2006 11:11 pm (UTC)
Thanks. Hooray for Photoshop! ;)

Ah, you definitely gotta go back and watch it. It's a relaly good one! Torri is awesome in it.

BUAGH! I WANT THAT DAMN CAMERA!

I love the osprey! ::smooshes it::
Kirsten[info]xfkirsten on May 4th, 2006 02:24 am (UTC)
Mine! My camera! :P *huggles it*

I just wish the osprey hadn't come out so dark! *curses the bright white sky*

Ospreys! I have no idea why, but I always did my reports on them. They're really nifty.
Kirsten[info]xfkirsten on May 4th, 2006 02:23 am (UTC)
Absolutely gorgeous birds! I've seen them around quite a bit in that area, but never had my camera handy when they were around.
The Duuuuuuude[info]dcpesses on May 4th, 2006 01:09 am (UTC)
Hey, they may still be 'meh' for you, but they're good nonetheless. :)
Kirsten[info]xfkirsten on May 4th, 2006 02:23 am (UTC)
Eh, the rest of them, not so great. And those ones are only good because I attacked them with Photoshop. :P

Photoshop...ATTACK! *gestures to troopers behind me*

Love the pics! :) The bunny is so cute! :)

Torri on the Outer Limits? Really? I did not know that. Not that I've seen all that many episodes, so that isn't saying much ;). Her character sounds like it would make it really interesting to watch.
Kirsten[info]xfkirsten on May 4th, 2006 02:22 am (UTC)
There were like three of those bunnies together! Two ran off, and the third (which was closest to me) froze in place.

If you're a Torri fan, it's definitely worth a watch! She's awesome in it - that's one of my favorites. Her character is so insecure, and Torri does a great job with that. :)
Amie[info]hipapheralkus on May 4th, 2006 02:26 am (UTC)
I'm slowly becoming a Torri fan, and not just an Elizabeth fan ;). I've never seen Torri in anything aside from Atlantis, but I'll take your word for it that she was great (cause I trust you on these things :D, and TLG shows she has a lot more untapped acting potential then tptb are using).

Now I only need to figure out where to find the episode so I can watch it :)
Kirsten[info]xfkirsten on May 4th, 2006 02:37 am (UTC)
Outer Limits is definitely one of her best, IMHO, along with Irish Eyes/Vendetta and Airborne. The characters are all so different, and I really love that just her body language is enough to convery how different they are.

*cough*Got a fast internet connection?*cough* *whistles innocently*
Amie[info]hipapheralkus on May 4th, 2006 02:42 am (UTC)
Hmm, I shall have to check them out.

Yes *cough* I have a fast internet connection *cough*, but stupid Bell and their usage limits. *sigh*

Might check out a vid store, see if I can find them.

Sadness! Well, it looks like season one of the new series was just released on DVD last November (TVShowsonDVD link), so it'll be awhile before they get to season five, which had Torri's ep. :(
Amie[info]hipapheralkus on May 4th, 2006 12:32 pm (UTC)
Aw, bummer :(. Oh well, maybe I'll accidentally catch it on a rerun ...
Kasatka[info]kasatka on May 4th, 2006 02:04 am (UTC)
I think they're immature buffleheads.

I really like the heron pics. =D
Kirsten[info]xfkirsten on May 4th, 2006 02:20 am (UTC)
Yeah, the more I look at them, the more I think bufflehead. It just strikes me as really odd that there were NO adult males anywhere to be seen!
Disco Dollie[info]_disco_dollie_ on May 4th, 2006 02:24 am (UTC)
Awwww. Bunny is cute. I also liked that Snowy Egret... so pretty.

Snoqualmie, eh? hehehe...
Kirsten[info]xfkirsten on May 4th, 2006 02:34 am (UTC)
Oh, man, those snowy egrets are everywhere along Mission Bay. I practically had one skewer my hand at SeaWorld once, when it tried to get a fish from me!

Best Concrete in the Northwest! ;) If I wanted to ski on an ice rink, I'd just go downtown - it's far cheaper. ;)
Jillian[info]studiosprincess on May 4th, 2006 03:06 am (UTC)
Great pics! :)

I think the unknown one is a group of fluffy feathery duckies in the water ;) do I get my cyber cookies? :D
Kirsten[info]xfkirsten on May 5th, 2006 02:21 am (UTC)
Sure, close enough! :D
Anastasia[info]zerofantasym on May 4th, 2006 04:13 am (UTC)
WOOO birdies!!! :D Yeah it'd help if the day was sunny!!! :D

Torri in OL was... different, but certainly brilliant.. even though some scenes were just silly, LOL
Kirsten[info]xfkirsten on May 5th, 2006 02:22 am (UTC)
Their colors look so much prettier in the sun. :P That cloudy sky doesn't do the blue on the little blue heron justice. :P

She was so cute, though, hiding in a corner and peeking out all shy. :P
