Happy Earth Day!
Interview! Tuesday morning! I just really hope that I don't run into the same problems with my availability between now and the end of finals. *curses the fact that she's getting into a highly competitive line of work*

I will forgo the GW rant, since it's pretty much all been covered in everyone else's LJs. :P

In honor of Earth Day:
Yoinked from [info]_disco_dollie_:
What's your ecological footprint?
Food: 4.4 acres
Mobility: 4.4 acres
Shelter: 2 acres
Goods/Services: 5.9 acres
Total footprint: 17 acres
In comparison, the average ecological footprint in your country is 24 acres per person.
Worldwide, there exist 4.5 biologically productive acres per person.
If everyone lived like you, we would need 3.8 planets.

And a few environmental education links that I think are particularly good. Put Earth Day to use, and learn the facts on the environment around us!

Dimming the Sun: Website of a REALLY good, eye-opening PBS special on global warming and the lesser-known but potentially more devastating global dimming.

Mexican Gray Wolf Reintroduction: Learn about the plight of the rarest subspecies of gray wolf!

A History of the Kaibab Deer: Learn from this real-life example what happens to an ecosystem where humans remove the top predators!

Issues Affecting the Southern Resident Orcas: Learn about the threat of extirpation facing one of the most famous populations of killer whales in the world.

Taiji Dolphin Campaign: Video of some of the most atrocious torture committed against dolphins as a part of the annual drive fisheries in Japan. Incredible horrible, but SUCH an eye-opener. WARNING: GRAPHIC PHOTOS AND VIDEOS

Kirsten[info]xfkirsten on April 23rd, 2006 02:13 am (UTC)
I hate humanity more and more every day. There's wonderful people out there, to be sure... but there's so many whose actions disgust me...

[info]tooshort4myego on April 23rd, 2006 02:14 am (UTC)
i must be a better person than you, because I only used 11 square acres, and if more people were like me, we would only need 2.5 planets! so there!
Kirsten: Liz - Oh Noes[info]xfkirsten on April 23rd, 2006 02:23 am (UTC)
Damn! I'm so going to environmentalist hell. :P

Mine would be so much happier if I didn't drive 130+ miles round trip each week to the Wolf Center. :P
BreezieGirl[info]bleach226 on April 23rd, 2006 02:29 am (UTC)
I'm at 11 too!
this and that...[info]alyssa22 on April 23rd, 2006 02:20 am (UTC)
Wolfgirl needs 3.8 planets?? Am shocked!!!
Kirsten[info]xfkirsten on April 23rd, 2006 02:24 am (UTC)
Try it and tell me how many YOU need! :P Actually, the fact that I have to drive so far to the Wolf Center and the fact that I eat meat occasionally probably makes mine considerably higher than yours, LOL.
Rebecca[info]imwithrebel on April 23rd, 2006 04:42 am (UTC)
Oooh, what happened at GW? I missed out on something, lol.

I need 3.2 planets.
Kirsten[info]xfkirsten on April 23rd, 2006 09:34 pm (UTC)
Ah, just more Weir thread drama...

*huggles the Earth*

We do have a fine third rock from the sun don't we? I love to use non-toxic cleaning products and soaps. SO cool.
Kirsten[info]xfkirsten on April 23rd, 2006 09:34 pm (UTC)
We do. If only more people would take care of it!

Good luck with the interview!

Could not watch the vidoes/pics. I can't stand torture of animals... makes me sick,.. but the global warming one is interesting.

Hardly go to GW these days, except maybe to the thunking thread once a week or something. Don't know about any rant, but I'm so glad I'm out of it!

Hang in there - and let us know how you go, eh?
Kirsten[info]xfkirsten on April 23rd, 2006 09:35 pm (UTC)
Thanks!

Those videos and pics are even hard for me to watch, and I know exactly what's in them. I have yet to see the last minute of the video because I always have to turn it off before then.

I enjoy GW, but the fighting has just gotten to be too much. *sigh*

Good luck with interview! Thanks for the education links =))
It seems, I not so strongly pollute the Earth. Rather..
Food: 1 acres
Mobility: 0 acres
Shelter: 0.7 acres
Goods/Services: 1.1 acres
Total footprint: 2.8 acres
In comparison, the average ecological footprint in your country is 4.8 acres per person.
Worldwide, there exist 1.8 biologically productive acres per person.
If everyone lived like you, we would need 1.6 planets.
Kirsten[info]xfkirsten on April 23rd, 2006 09:36 pm (UTC)
Thanks! I've got my fingers crossed! :D

Thanks for the link to this quiz, I took it, too, these are my results:

CATEGORY GLOBAL HECTARES
FOOD 1.3
MOBILITY 0.1
SHELTER 0.6
GOODS/SERVICES 0.8
TOTAL FOOTPRINT 2.8

IN COMPARISON, THE AVERAGE ECOLOGICAL FOOTPRINT IN YOUR COUNTRY IS 4.7 GLOBAL HECTARES PER PERSON.
WORLDWIDE, THERE EXISTS 1.8 BIOLOGICALLY PRODUCTIVE GLOBAL HECTARES PER PERSON.
IF EVERYONE LIVED LIKE YOU, WE WOULD NEED 1.6 PLANETS.

(sorry that it's in capitals, I copied it from the mail and was too lazy to transcribe it)

Concerning GW, is it still about the ship war or the stupid people in the Torri thread? I'm also still not happy with everything in the McKay thunk, but I gave it up to say anything about it, I just got into trouble for it. But I'm still angry about the newest cases of Rodney character bashing on GW. I swear, some people are not able to talk about their favourite character without making comparisons to McKay and whine about him getting all the attention. So much nonsense...

Good luck at the interview!!!

Wish you all the best,
A.

Forgive my stupid question about GW, I just saw that the TH threads were closed and I guess that's what you were referring to. I was shocked when I saw the 'thread closed' symbol and read what had happened. I can't believe that it has come to that.
GW is really a strange place lately. I don't know what's up with some of the fans, especially some of the newbies. But from my own experiences in the DH thunk thread I can say that even some of the regulars didn't get my point when I wrote about the thread getting shallow and about the fights and the pointless posts no mod can do anything about, and so on...

But I'm rambling although you didn't want to talk about it, so I better shut up now. I just hope everything will change for the better now with the new threads!

*hugs*
Kirsten[info]xfkirsten on April 23rd, 2006 09:38 pm (UTC)
Nah, this is all about the Torri thread stuff. It's frustrating trying to work it out without making posts that come across as personal attacks, because I think there ARE issues with individuals that need to be addressed, but I don't want to come across as insulting when I do so.

I'm amazed at the fact that you keep managing to find jobs to apply for in such a specialised field. Incredible! Good luck with this one. Your experience with volunteer work will have to count for you... and the fact you're pretty much a local
Kirsten[info]xfkirsten on April 24th, 2006 02:55 pm (UTC)
It helps to have a site like the AZA (American Zoo and Aquarium Association) that posts job listings daily. ;)

Well that's a very good thing!! Someone give Kirsten a job!!!! Now!!!!!!! Or we'll set Qasim on you! (couldn't he freak the hell out of them? Don't you think?)

P.S. Good luck with the job interview! Kick some ass!!
